Art or Not?

Wed Jun 11, 2008, 6:01 AM
Do you ever see a gallery of an artist whose art is totally different of your own, and secretly, deep down, you think, "This isn't really art,"? I know I have, and it kind of disturbs me. And mostly because I can't figure out what's really true.

On the one hand, art is art, right? Every expression of feeling, imagination and thought can be said to be art. Poetry, photography, drawing, painting, dance, song, cooking. But where do you draw the line? When do you yell, "Enough!"? Is it when you go into a museum to find a line of pencil framed and hanging on the wall? Or when someone's dirty dishes are on display? How about when a crappy snap shot sells for millions?

I think the real way to determine art is with how much effort and thought was put into the piece. I think that when there's no effort, and very little thought, it's just all silliness. Even simple pieces of art require us to use our brains and to put a small amount of effort into it.

And there's my ramble for the day.

If the piece can happen by accident just as easy as it was made by the artist. Then it aint art.
For example, nobody could drop a bucket of paint on accident and create the mona lisa.

Yeah, that's a really good point. :3 And pretty much what I was trying to say. That you have to put effort into the art.

Art is creating, and what you consider as art is your point of view of art. By destroying you can create too. Some say it's art to torture animals, i don't think so. Others say that a certain painting is art, I might think the opposite. I often think that such pieces of art that only repeat something someone has already done, isn't really "good" art. I don't think you should be worried if you think that something isn't art, it's your opinion =)
I believe art, like you're saying, does require effort. I think the people splashing paint on something, in random ways, isn't art to me. But, then again, it is to someone else, sou, honestly, if it is their form of creativity, then why can't it be called art? I guess in conclusion, I guess art is art in the eye of the creator, whether or not it is to anyone else.
